Nothing But Fun and Music
August 15th, 2007 by Matt“This is the largest group of people ever assembled in one place, and I think you people have proven something to the world: that a half a million kids can get together and have three days of fun and music and have nothing but fun and music, and I God bless you for it!”
- Max Yasgur, pig farmer whose farm was the site of the Woodstock festival
Today is the day 38 years ago that the Woodstock Music and Art Fair began in Bethel, New York (at least 50 driving miles away from the actual town of Woodstock). The festival ended early on the morning of Monday, August 18, 1969.
The significance of Woodstock has been debated through the years. Some call it the most significant event in music history.
No doubt it was one of those “markers in time” like the assassination of JFK, the Moon landing, and 9/11. Not that I’m comparing Woodstock to a tragedy like 9/11, but instead, I mean it’s one of those points in history that survive in people’s minds years beyond the event.
In fact, to this day, there are people who claim to have been at Woodstock who really weren’t there. But with a half-million people there, it’s easy to say you were there - assuming you’re old enough.
I could have been there. It would be easy for me to say I was. I was actually about 100 miles away visting my grandfather. I tried to convince my father to take us there — hey I was 13! — but he wasn’t about to go along with that idea.
The Wikipedia entry on Woodstock has a lot of good information including a run down of who played when, and set lists for the performers, along with information on artists that didn’t appear for one reason or another.
